The circular water economy

Eco Clarity Circular Water Economy
The recent report by WSP and the UK Water Partnership highlights the untapped potential of a circular water economy and emphasises the need for innovative solutions to resource recovery. Fat, oil and grease (FOG) is one such resource that holds immense potential for transforming wastewater management.
At EcoClarity, we’re at the forefront of this shift, turning FOG waste into renewable biofuels, drastically reducing sewer blockages, and contributing to carbon savings. The UK has the opportunity to follow the lead of pioneering nations like the Netherlands, where circular water systems are driving sustainability and economic growth.
FOG represents a critical part of the solution:
  • Prevents sewer clogs, cutting maintenance costs.
  • Generates biodiesel feedstock, supporting the transition to renewable fuel.
  • Demonstrates how waste can become a valuable resource in the circular economy.
By integrating FOG recovery into the broader circular water framework, we can create new market opportunities, reduce carbon footprints, and build resilient systems that align with the UK’s net-zero goals.
Let’s not just recycle. Let’s regenerate. Collaboration between businesses, water companies and innovators is key. Together, we can make the UK a leader in sustainable water management.

Sustainability Champion: Clearway Environmental

EcoClarity Kitchen Waste Disposal

At EcoClarity, we’re passionate about partnering with local businesses to drive positive environmental change. Today, we’re excited to spotlight Clearway Environmental, a Hull-based company making a significant impact in sustainable waste management. Clearway has shown a strong commitment to reducing their carbon footprint by responsibly managing fat, oil, and grease (FOG) waste with us.

Here’s the impact Clearway achieved in October

  • By managing FOG waste sustainably, Clearway prevented nearly 5,500 kg of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. That’s equivalent to planting 90 new trees and letting them grow for 10 years, or avoiding the emissions of nearly 14,000 miles in an average petrol-fuelled car on Hull’s roads.
  • Clearway went beyond simple disposal by converting over two tonnes of FOG waste into biodiesel feedstock. This biodiesel produces up to 87% less carbon than traditional fossil fuels, supporting the global push for cleaner energy alternatives.

Strength in local partnerships

As two Hull-based companies, EcoClarity and Clearway Environmental share a vision for our city’s future: a cleaner, greener Hull. Working together on sustainable waste management allows us to contribute to Hull’s environmental goals and explore how local businesses can support each other in building a circular economy. By transforming waste into a resource, we’re taking small but meaningful steps toward closing the loop on waste management and creating lasting value for the community.

Driving Innovation: Transforming Waste into Biofuel Through FOG Recovery Hubs

Fabrinox was approached by UK-based company EcoClarity, a waste-to-energy service provider, to co-develop and manufacture revolutionary “FOG Recovery Hubs”. These innovative hubs, characterized by their modular, scalable, and containerized design, are at the forefront of a revolutionary approach to the management of Grease Trap Waste (GTW) generated by Food Service Establishments (FSEs).

The primary objective of EcoClarity’s FOG Recovery Hubs is to provide accessible disposal locations for haulers to sustainably manage wastewater containing fats, oil and grease (FOG). By intercepting this waste before it enters the sewer network or wastewater treatment facilities, these hubs help mitigate potential blockages, spills, and costly clean-up operations that can result from FOG accumulation in the water system. Furthermore, these hubs have the unique capability to consolidate the extracted FOG into a biofuel feedstock suitable for biodiesel production, which can be blended with diesel fuel.

EcoClarity – Winner of the Sustainability Category

Through the utilization of EcoClarity’s FOG Recovery Hubs, FSEs, haulers, and water utilities are empowered to adopt a circular economy model. By running their vehicles on biofuel derived from the waste they generate, stakeholders can not only create value from previously considered valueless waste but also contribute to cost savings, water conservation, reduced transportation impacts, and environmental sustainability.

The EcoClarity FOG to Fuel Technology, facilitated by the FOG Recovery Hubs, represents a significant leap forward in environmental sustainability and resource management. By efficiently converting FOG waste into biofuel, this technology holds the potential to transform waste management practices and drive advancements in renewable energy production.

EcoClarity Kitchen Waste Disposal

Fabrinox’s successful production of three operational FOG Recovery Hubs that already operate in locations across the UK demonstrates the growing interest and adoption of this innovative solution both internationally and locally. As the demand for sustainable waste management solutions continues to rise, the collaborative efforts between ourselves and EcoClarity are setting new benchmarks in mitigating environmental impact, promoting circular economy practices, and advancing renewable energy initiatives.
